Rdum tal-Madonna is a Natura 2000 Site – What does that mean?

Rdum tal-Madonna is designated as a:

  • Special Protection Area (SPA) for birds
  • Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for vegetation,
  • Important Bird Area (IBA).

This means that it is protected from damaging activities as part of the European Natura 2000 Network. It has been protected because it hosts one of Europe’s most threatened species (the Yelkouan Shearwater) and habitats. All 25 countries of the EU are working together through the Natura 2000 network to protect Europe’s natural heritage in these special sites for the benefit of everyone.
