Expert assesses rat eradication progress

What action will we take?

We aim to reduce the threats to the Yelkouan Shearwaters throughout the project and beyond. Here are some examples of what the project will be doing:

  • Putting electronic devices onto the birds to find out for the first time where they go when they leave the nesting colony and which are the most important feeding areas at sea.
  • This data will contribute to the creation of a Marine Special Protection Area.
  • Developing a Management Plan for the site - this will also act as a blueprint for other protected sites
  • Working closely with local fishermen, we will find out how fishing might be affecting the birds and what measures we can take to prevent birds from being accidentally caught.
  • Advising boats to avoid the key areas during the breeding season (March to July) from two hours before dusk and two hours after dawn
  • Rat eradication
  • Employing a Site Warden to patrol the site, offer free guided walks and undertake essential research work
  • The Armed Forces of Malta will be patrolling at sea throughout the project to ensure that birds are not shot or otherwise affected by activities from boats.
  • Camping, which generates noise, vegetation damage and rubbish which attracts rats, will be phased out within key designated areas.
  • Light and noise pollution comes mainly from the recreational sector and we will work with them to find alternative locations for their activities.
